Pretended Family Bobble Caps

Commentary

Date: 1991

Media: Oil on canvas

Size: 4 x 3.5 feet

Commentary:

This painting is a comment on a piece of English law called Section 28 (of the Local Government Act) that lesbians and Gay men have been fighting against before and since it became law in 1988. Section 28 actually reads:

"Prohibition on promoting homosexuality by teaching or publishing material 28.    (1)The following section shall be inserted after section 2 of the Local Government Act 1986 (prohibition of political publicity)

2A-(1) A local Authority shall not-

(a) intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality;

(b) promote the teaching in any  maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.

This painting tries to show the ridiculous nature of the phrase 'pretended family relationship', taking it's theme from a knitting pattern book, I exchanged the male figure for a female, turning a 'real' family into a 'pretend' one. However, in reading the title, it is ambiguous as to whether it is the family that is 'pretended' or actually the bobble caps that are not real. What do you think?
