Misfit

Commentary

Date: 1997

Media: Oil on canvas

Size: 5.5 x 3.5 feet

Commentary:
I saw an interview with Armstead Maupin on the TV. He said that from an early age he felt that he didn't fit in with everyone else, that he was somehow 'wired differently' from everyone else, but not knowing what it was, just knowing that he was different. This is the case for many people growing up gay, and was certainly the case for me too.
This painting is taken from an old family photograph, the 2 adults are my mother and father and I am the figure in the section of the jigsaw apart from the rest in the centre. If you look carefully you will also notice that these pieces taken out of the jigsaw do not link up, so this section will never become part of the rest of the picture. By this I have tried to reflect the feeling of never being part of the same world as even my parents, that I was somehow apart from it.
