Mickey Comes Out

Commentary

Date: 1994

Media: Oil on canvas

Size: each canvas 30 inches square

Commentary:
A set of 3 separate square canvases. Mickey on the left is sweating over a letter he is writing, the centre canvas is the letter itself and the painting on the right show's Minnie's reaction to Mickey's letter.
Painted firstly as a bit of a joke, and it made lots of people laugh when it was exhibited in a bookshop in Liverpool (UK), many a small child asked their mothers 'mummy what does 'Gay' mean?' the reply being mostly 'it just means that Mickey is very happy' quickly dragging the child away from the painting, blushing. Lots of fun to watch. However, this work has a more serious meaning, about the formative years of childhood, the norm being heterosexuality. The shocking notion that a child may grow up to be gay is reflected by having Mickey, an icon of childhood in the 20th Century 'come out' to his girlfriend.
