Commentary:
This painting is taken from an atlas.  I wanted to make a painting with a subtle gay theme and as the Greek Island of Lesbos is where Lesbians get their name from, I thought that this would be ideal.  This painting was exhibited in an open exhibition at the City Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke on Trent in 1994.  At the opening of this exhibition I over heard a middle aged man say to his wife 'its just a painting of a map!' which quite pleased me, I wanted the painting's theme to be recognisable to people who are 'in the know', for it to be like all those gay symbols that most straight people don't recognise, like labyris ear-rings and the lambda symbol.
