Painting taken from a portrait of Gluck

Commentary

Date: 1991

Media: Oil on Canvas

Size: each canvas 3.5 x 3.5 feet

Commentary:
These two canvases are studies taken from a painting by Romaine Brooks (a lesbian artist) of another artist (also a lesbian) called Gluck.  Gluck was a British artist who's best work was produced during the 1920's and 30's.  She mostly painted flowers for the upper classes but also produced portraits and paintings that reflect the Jazz age and the fashions of the time.  This original painting by Romain Brooks is called 'Peter, a Young English Girl' which shows Gluck in her usual male attire.  I decided to do these studies to place myself within a tradition of lesbian artists, and to pay homage to some of the women who have paved the way for other lesbian artists, or have at least left us a history to build on. I also love Art Deco and some of Glucks paintings are the most beautiful examples of Art Deco painting. If you are interested in Gluck and her work, then I recommend reading her biography by Diana Souhami.
